FAQs

Parents won’t have to teach any classes. All classes take place through live lessons with teachers, and teachers check in on learners’ progress during the day. Parents of primary school learners may initially need to help ensure that self-directed learning takes place until learners have developed the necessary self-discipline.

Yes, all classes are presented online by subject-specific teachers, and teachers check in on learners’ progress during the day.

Classes are presented according to a daily timetable. With no more than 15 learners per class, our teachers are able to notice when any learner doesn’t attend. As learners need parental permission to miss a class (and watch the recording later), parents will be informed if learners are not attending classes.

Yes, all classes take place through live lessons with teachers unless the teacher has specifically assigned a pre-recorded lesson. All lessons are also recorded so that learners can re-watch it at a later stage. Learners who were absent with permission can also access these recordings at a later stage so they never miss out on any teaching.

As all our classes are recorded, learners who missed a class can access the recording along with the relevant digital material at any time of the day. Furthermore, with no more than 25 learners per class, our teachers are able to notice when a learner doesn’t attend and can check in with them to ensure that everything is in order.

Our learners are prepared for the IEB examinations at the end of Grade 12. However, we take a greater world-readiness approach rather than prepare them only for examinations, so that they can fluently apply what they have learned to the world around them.

Exams will be written online supervision from your home. Only the final Grade 12 examination will need to be written at an approved IEB examination centre (such as Curro Schools or Curro Select Schools).

You will need a stable Internet connection with a minimum download speed of 10Mbps and upload speed of 2Mbps, as well as a monthly data cap of 50Gb. Our programmes are not compatible with Apple devices or tablets – a desktop computer or laptop with 8Gb RAM is recommended.

All classes are scheduled according to a timetable, including time for self-directed learning. Teachers initiate each class and guide learners through the prescribed material on the online platform. Learners may ask questions during the lesson and contact teachers with questions later on. All lessons are also recorded so that learners can refer back to it later on for revision or understanding.

Home schooling requires one or both parents to teach their children themselves, by fully taking on the role of a teacher. This involves them setting a timetable, monitoring their child’s progress, marking assignments, and taking full responsibility for their academic welfare.

With online learning, parents aren’t required to teach any material, although they may need to help learners develop the required self-discipline. Learners have live sessions with teachers, as well as access to recorded classes, digital learning tools, and additional multimedia-based learning material. Online learning allows learners to learn from the comfort of home and to work at their own pace within a timetable.

The main advantage of online learning at Curro Online is that it presents learners with a flexible alternative to traditional classroom-based education. Furthermore, learners never have to leave the comfort of your home and they can work at their own pace within a timetable.

Here are some of the other advantages:

  • Learners work at their own pace within a timetable and have time for self-directed learning.
  • There is no need for boarding school, travel costs, or uniforms, as they learn from home.
  • Families that travel often can still enjoy uninterrupted teaching while travelling, as long as they have a stable Internet connection.
  • Parents aren’t required to teach as classes take place through live lessons with teachers.
  • Learners with disabilities or other mobility restrictions have access to quality education.
  • There are no distractions from classmates, such as undue conversations or physical bullying.
  • Learners develop valuable soft skills such as self-discipline, communication, time management, and independent thinking skills.
  • Learning material can be re-watched and accessed at any time, as all classes are recorded.
  • There is less pressure to keep up with classmates, and leaners won’t be held back (or left behind) by the learning pace of their classmates.

Online learning is a great option for parents who want to their children to learn from home while still getting an excellent education. It is best suited to those who are self-disciplined and self-motivated.

Curro Online is the right choice for your family if:

  • Traveling to school is challenging due to your job requirements.
  • There is no nearby Curro school or Curro-managed school.
  • You want your child to write the IEB examination at the end of Grade 12.
  • Your child has a disability or medical condition that makes it difficult (or dangerous) for them to attend physical classes.
  • Your child prefers to work on their own, rather than being surrounded by other learners.
  • Your child is self-disciplined, self-motivated and can operate responsibly without parental supervision.
  • Your child needs to keep learning while your family is temporarily out of the country.

A once-off enrolment fee is payable upon acceptance of the learner’s application. Thereafter, a monthly all-inclusive fee is payable via debit order. Please refer to our fee structure for more information.

The following software licenses are included in the school fees:

  • Microsoft Office 365 license (including all necessary apps and programmes)
  • Mindspark license
  • Reading Eggs license
  • Virtual Robotics license
  • Siyavula license

Our admin offices are situated in Cape Town. However, as we are an online school, classes take place through live lessons with teachers who are situated across the country.

Yes, learners will receive a National Senior Certificate issued by Umalusi, as with all public or independent school matriculants. Our learners also write the IEB examination at the end of Grade 12, which greatly prepares them for the demands of a tertiary education institution.

Teachers who experience load shedding will inform learners ahead of time (unless load shedding is implemented unexpectedly) and will then load a recording for that lesson as soon as they can.

The subject teacher for your child’s grade will personally mark all assignments, and keep track of your child’s progress. The same teacher will give your child the necessary personalised feedback and also give you, the parent, any necessary feedback.
